I never had any formal art training. In fact, I did not know if I could even draw. I admired my mother’s artwork. She was very talented and had been a past president of the Atlanta Portrait Society. Upon her untimely death in 1985 of cancer, all of my siblings wanted her paintings. I was fortunate that she had allowed me to decorate my office with her artwork so my request was for her painting materials. I did not know what I was going to do with it, but I had a growing passion to give watercolor painting a try and I felt this was a start. I did nothing with the material for 9 years; then in 1994 I took a class at the Atlanta College of Art. It was here that I found out what a treasure I had in my mother’s brushes and materials. I dabbled in trying to paint for a year and then I took a class from the Spruill Art Center in landscape watercolor painting under Frank Broadhurst. Frank had been a past president of the Georgia Watercolor Society. We became good friends over the next several months. At the end of the class he told me I had talent and he took me on as a student. Frank taught me the tricks of how to use this difficult media. Frank died in 2004 and I acquired much of his art supplies as well. One wonderful skill Frank taught me was how to mat and frame my paintings.
I have had paintings displayed in juried shows by the Georgia Watercolor Society as well as the Bascom Art Gallery in Highlands, NC. I am a life member of the Georgia Watercolor Society.
